Getting Healthy with New Year’s Resolutions

With the month of January coming to an end, I think it is safe to say that around this time, those New Year’s resolutions that so many people had enthusiastically set will start to dwindle and fade out.

New Year’s is an exciting time where many people set new goals for themselves. Usually these goals involve losing weight, going to the gym, doing better in school, etc. I think goal-setting is a great thing and is an important tool in achieving anything.

The problem with New Year’s resolutions is that so many people get caught up in the hype of it all, and after a few weeks, they lose sight of their goals and just quit.

Whatever your goals might be, the most important step in assuring that you complete your goal is to break that goal down into smaller, more manageable goals. For example, if my goal is to lose weight that’s a great start, but it is too vague.

Manageable goals for losing weight would be to go to the gym three times a week, to eat three healthy meals per day and lose five pounds in two weeks. These goals are much more specific and easier to follow because they lay out a plan to follow.

Being held accountable to complete your goal is another great way to stick to it. Sharing your goal with people who are close to you will cause you to be less likely to fail because you will not want to disappoint your friends and family. Making your announcement more public will create even more motivation, like signing up for a 5K race.

Also, reward yourself when appropriate. If you are trying to lose weight and are dieting, one meal of whatever you want once per week would be a good reward. Maybe if you are trying to study more, you could treat yourself to a night out with a friend. Everyone needs a break and positive reassurance.

Just remember that no matter what your goal is, be consistent. Good habits take time, but ultimately they are the key to success.
