They call themselves “the best kept secret” in Springfield and with their succulent food, cozy atmosphere, and affordable prices; “Q Smokin’ Good Food,” may just be.

The restaurant, located at 890 State Street, has a rustic feel to it. Large windows open up to the outside, with seating all along them. The bar is at the heart of the restaurant, and a large Indian motorcycle sits in the back, paying homage to the former Indian motorcycle factory that sits right across the street.

Owned and operated by the Spagnoli family (Chris, his father Craig, and Chris’ wife Sarah-Anne) the restaurant offers made-in-house authentic southern barbeque.

The menu has classic platters such as their juicy fried chicken; smokey pulled pork and sliced brisket, which they smoke for 14 hours. For starters you can get hush puppies, wings, or a serving of cornbread. For a more modern twist try the cornbread sundae, Sarah-Anne’s own creation, consisting of pulled pork topped with cornbread, sour cream and scallions. To finish it all of you can get desserts, made in house, ranging from hummingbird cake, lemon bars, and milkshakes.

“Our whole deal here is fresh,” said Chris. “We make all of the fixings here, the meat is smoked tonight for tomorrow, and all of the deserts are made here.”

Chris and Sarah-Anne, who are originally from South Carolina, take pride in their cooking, providing customers with only the freshest ingredients. Barbeque is something that Q takes seriously, and they take it even further on the weekend with their fried catfish, and smoked salmon specials.

“We kept having people who wanted to put in a nail salon, or a hair salon – well look up the street,’ said Chris who owned the building space prior to the restaurant. Chris decided to take matters into his own hands and use the space for something a little more unique. “We take over distressed properties and make them right. We run our business as if I wouldn’t sit here and eat here I’m not going to do this.”

It is no secret that the city of Springfield can be misunderstood. Some students may feel the need to stay on campus, or to go a few towns over to get entertainment. However, Q wants to keep students in Springfield.

“You’re in this area because you want to be here, so why shouldn’t you walk down the road and go somewhere fun,” Chris said. “The goal of this is to have folks come in, throw down a laptop, and hit the free wifi.” 

Almost every table is equipped with outlets so students can charge their laptops if they want to bring their next study session to Q. They even receive 10 percent off their purchase with their student I.D. If you’re twenty-one or over Chris also takes pride in their, on-tap, craft beer selection that rotates quite frequently.

With Q being only three-blocks away from campus, there is no excuse not to try some authentic South Carolina Barbeque. So ready your taste buds, because “the best kept secret” is now out.
