Tis the season to hit the movie theaters! With the holiday season in full swing, it’s time to take a look at what movies are worth using your millions of movie theater gift cards on.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (Dec. 17)

Starring: Ian McKellen, Martin Freeman, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Kate Blanchett, Orlando Bloom

Possibly the last Lord of the Rings movie ever, The Hobbit has received scrutiny over the past two years due to some made up story lines and over reliance on computer animation for action sequences. Despite all that, third movies always seem to shine the brightest (except for the Godfather trilogy).

Do not expect to see the awe-inspiring and breathing taking cinematography that the original LOTR trilogy boasted, but do expect action and fantasy. Will Smaug (Benedict Cumberbatch) be defeated, who are the five armies and what will they be fighting over?

If you have read the books you might know how these questions are answered but it always feels good to see them play out on the big screen.

Unbroken (Dec. 25)

Starring: Jack O’Connell, Domhnall Gleeson, Jai Courtney

Better bring a tissue box to the theater for this one as Unbroken displays the true story of Louis Zamperini, an Olympic athlete turned soldier. Taken prisoner by the Japanese during World War II, Zamparini’s story of unbroken determination and spirit will tug at your heart strings.

A truly inspiring story that can satisfy any movie goers pleasure whether it’s action, drama, musical composition, etc. With Angelina Jolie making her first directorial debut, Unbroken will please those of all ages and movie tastes.

The Gambler (Dec. 25)

Starring: Mark Wahlberg, Jessica Lange, Brie Larson, John Goodman

Another movie to watch come award season, The Gambler could be a really outstanding movie. However, there have been comparisons to ‘Now You See Me’ which performed poorer than what everyone expected. Wahlberg, though, could pull through, as he has taken a wider variety of roles the past couple years showing just how talented he can be. Could he finally get the Oscar? Only time (and sales) will tell.

American Sniper (Jan. 16)

Starring: Bradley Cooper, Sienna Miller, Brian Hallisay

What’s better than Bradley Cooper shooting people as a small raccoon? Bradley Cooper shooting people as an American Sniper! In all seriousness, this movie could vault Cooper to the top of all the Academy Award ballots. Representing one of the most lethal American snipers in history, Cooper’s acting and portrayal of said character will make or break the movie.

The trailer displays just how much fate rests in the sniper’s hands. Look out for American Sniper come award season, this one will be a classic.
