A Do’s and Don’ts Guide to Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is quickly approaching. People in relationships often look forward to February 14. The single crowd sometimes feels left out of the festivities and often refers to the holiday as “Singles Awareness Day.” Those in long distance relationships probably won’t get to see their significant other, making them miss each other a little extra. Then, there are those who finally want to confess their feelings, but can’t seem to work up enough courage.  Whatever your situation is, here are some tips on how to make your Valentine’s Day a happy one.

If you are in a relationship, do plan on spending time with you significant other, but don’t make a huge deal out of Valentine’s Day.

Get dinner at your favorite restaurant and go see a movie.  It is a cliché idea, but it doesn’t cost a lot of money and is fun. Other ideas include going ice skating, getting frozen yogurt, or just spending the night in.

It’s a good idea to buy your boyfriend or girlfriend a present, but don’t go overboard. Girls are easier to please than one would think. Try getting your girlfriend chocolates, roses, or a teddy bear. Try baking some homemade cookies for your boyfriend or buy him his favorite candy.

If you are single for Valentines Day, don’t get down on yourself.  Valentine’s day is about all kinds of love. Instead of feeling left out, get together with other single friends. Order pizza and have a movie night. Don’t forget to get some ice cream and chocolate, too.

If you are in a long distance relationship, do try to FaceTime or call each other at some point on Valentine’s Day. You could try ordering out and having dinner over Face Time. It is almost like the real thing. Also, sending your boyfriend or girlfriend a handwritten letter can be super romantic.

If you just got out of a relationship, it doesn’t mean you can’t have fun. Make sure you join in on whatever your friends have planned. Valentine’s Day falls on a Saturday this year, meaning you could get your friend group together for a night out. You never know whom you may meet.

If you want to tell that special someone how you feel, go for it! A small gesture could go a long way. Maybe surprise him or her with chocolates and a handmade card. It is the perfect way to show you’re interested without going overboard. If you’re dating someone and looking to make it official, planning a Valentine’s Day date shows you want to take things to the next level.

Overall, Valentine’s Day is just a day. Don’t set your expectations too high and don’t freak out if things don’t go as planned. It doesn’t matter if you are single, in a relationship, or somewhere in between, just have fun!
