As the snow fell on Saturday, the Springfield College men’s and women’s track and field teams hosted the New England Division III Track and Field Championships, as 26 teams from around New England piled into Springfield’s field house.

The men finished in 15th, with 20 total points. The women took 15th place as well, with 15 points.

For the men’s side, sophomore Alex Niemiec jumped 22-feet-11 inches to place second in the long jump, something he’s excelled in all year.

“His long jump was very impressive for not having jumped in two months,” head coach, Ken Klatka said. “Great kid, hard worker, and a good listener.”

Niemiec tied for first in the preliminaries for the 60 meter dash with a time of 6.97 seconds, but finished eighth in the finals with a time of 7.38.

“We knew he had a chance of winning it,” Klatka said. “But in the 60, his hamstring just gave out.”

Graduate student John Dayton posted 60-feet-one inches in the weight throw, good for a second place finish.

“He put it together and gave it his all, had a three-foot improvement over the last week, and continued to be one of the best throwers in the country,” Klatka said. “He rose to the occasion and got us to second place in the weight.”

Freshman high-jumper Jason Larmee jumped six-foot-four en route to a sixth place finish in his first New England Championships appearance.

Jacob Buhelt finished 13th in the 600 Meter Run at 1:25.73 seconds. Jack Pinho came in 15th in the 1000 Meter Run with a time of 2:37.17 seconds.

For the women’s side, Courtney Luscier took fifth in the 60 Meter Dash with a time of 7.88 seconds. Samantha Pomroy ran a 1:39.16 second 600 Meter Run, good for ninth place.

Abigail Wright took fourth in the 800 Meter Run with a finishing time of 2:16.46 seconds. Amanda Martin jumped 17.75 feet to earn an eighth place finish in the long jump. She took fourth in the triple jump as well, at 37-feet-eight inches.
