Ask Mack : Smoking, Love, Broken Plates & More

Ask Mack,

I accidentally broke a plate in Cheney, and everyone started clapping, I was so embarrassed. How do you feel about the clapping in Cheney?

-Brokenplateandheart

Dear Brokenplateandheart,

First of all, never be too hard on yourself for making an honest mistake as you obviously didn’t mean to drop the plate. Second of all, I HATE the clapping in Cheney. I think it’s mean-spirited and unnecessary. But if it makes you feel any better, the people clapping have no idea who actually dropped the plate. While you may have the spotlight effect for a minute or two, just know that, at most, 10 people saw you. And out of those 10 , you’re the only one who will even remember the incident five minutes from the drop. If this ever happens to you again, take a bow and give them something to actually clap about.

Ask Mack,

Where is your ideal spot for peace and quiet on campus?

-Lookingforserenity

Dear Lookingforserenity,

I suppose it really depends on what building you live in. I am fortunate enough to live in a suite with all my friends, but I also have my own bedroom to myself. This allows me to decorate in any way that I choose, which I find very peaceful. I have Christmas lights strung around my room to avoid the harsh overhead lighting, and a fan that blocks out distracting noises. There’s almost nowhere else I would rather calm down. In the event that you are living with a roommate, I would definitely recommend visiting the meditation room in the Union. It has colored lights that you can change depending on your mood, a nice view of the lake, and very comfortable seating choices. Not many people choose to spend their time in there, so I’d say it’s definitely worth a shot. Bring some calming music or homework, shut the doors, and just relax.

Ask Mack,

I have been smoking cigarettes for three years, but this person I like hates smokers. What should I do?

-Smokeorlove

Dear Smokeorlove,

Whether you like someone or not, my advice to you would be the same. STOP SMOKING! In my opinion, it just really isn’t worth it at the end of the day. Now that being said, I do understand how hard of a habit it is to quit. Fortunately, there are many different ways you can work on beating this addiction. There are patches, gums, and some people even use vapes so they don’t take in the same amount of nicotine. Hopefully this new love interest of yours will help you move forward, but if not, you have to do what you have to do. Even though I hate smoking, I’m a firm believer that people shouldn’t change for other people. If smoking is something that is that important to you, I would say forget the person and try to find someone who can get on board with it. All I’m saying is you wouldn’t find me caught dead kissing an ashtray.

Ask Mack,

Have you ever ventured on o the bridge behind Inty? Would you recommend it?

-Curiousclimber
Dear Curiousclimber,

I can say with great guarantee that I have never been on that bridge. Many of my friends have, but I have never felt the need to venture out there. I understand that most people like the view or even just the experience of being up there, but I have no desire to climb an old bridge to see what I can see from the top floor of Inty. Many people also enjoy jumping off this bridge into the water. This is the number one reason I will not climb up there. There is NOTHING you could say to get me into that water. I would recommend bringing a friend or two along with you if you insist on going, and also telling someone who isn’t going in case none of you return. It doesn’t seem too safe to me, but hey, to each his own, right? Just try not to be too stupid while you’re being stupid.
