Ask Mack,

I am having problems with my grades. It’s mid-semester and I would like to get my grades up. Any tips?

Dear Studying4days,

I’m sorry to hear that you’re having trouble. The good news is that there’s still time to get your grades up! The first step is to identify where you’re going wrong. What part of your grades is giving you the most trouble? Not handing in homework? Not participating in class? Not doing too well on exams or papers? Fortunately, all of these things are easily fixed. If you’re being lazy and not handing in all of your assignments, I think you can figure that one out on your own. If you’re being shy and not participating in class, you might be losing some major points without even knowing it. I’ve known teachers to use participation points to bump a B+ up to an A- so it’s definitely worth the effort on your part, even if that means having to pay a bit more attention in class. As for exams and papers, GO TO THE ACADEMIC SUCCESS CENTER! It’s so helpful and everyone there is really nice. You can walk in or make an appointment depending on what kind of help you’re looking for, but either way, they will have someone to help you study or help edit your paper. You can also request an academic coach if you feel like you’re getting too disorganized and you want some help staying on top of things. The important thing to remember is that it isn’t too late now, but if you keep putting off getting help, it may just be. Now get to work!

Ask Mack,

I’ve been dating my boyfriend for two weeks. His birthday is next week, but I can’t decide if it’s too soon in the relationship to get him a present or not. What do you think?

Dear Inlikeandbroke,

The fact that you’re concerned with getting him a present too soon means you’re probably not one of those crazy people who is obsessed with their new relationship, so congratulations on that. I say it’s totally fine to get him something, as long as it’s in the realm of reality. My best advice would be to get him something you can do together, like concert tickets or maybe tickets to see his favorite team play. I definitely would wait a little while before doing something too cutesy but that doesn’t mean it can’t be meaningful. I’m sure he’ll love anything you do because it’s from you but definitely try and steer away from crazy and more towards something his friends would get him. God forbid you get too sentimental and scare him away! Happy shopping!
