Ask Mack,

I’m interested in getting more involved on campus, but I’m not sure where to start, help!

Dear Lookingforfun,

You are in luck! Springfield College has so much to offer its students. Whether you’re looking for sports, music, or volunteer work, you’re in the right place. I would start by trying out different clubs. You can attend one meeting and decide if you like it or not before committing to anything. You can also look out for the weekly emails for things to do every week. These emails will often inform you of special events going on that you can buy tickets for at a discounted rate! On top of the dozens of clubs, there are also plenty of other things to get involved with. You can play intramural sports, audition for musical groups or plays, or even apply to work with Springfield youth. There are also really great leadership programs you can apply for a couple times a year, so look out for programs like NSO, LTC, or spring break trips. There are a lot of ways to have fun while making a difference, so have fun choosing!

Ask Mack,

What’s the protocol for approaching someone at a party? I’m a guy and I tried it this past weekend, but I think I came off as a creep. Do you have any advice?

Dear Creepycrawler,

I’m sorry you feel that you weren’t Mister Suave this weekend, but there are plenty of ways to fix that! Be outgoing, but not overly friendly. Outgoing can be great, but there is definitely a line between friendly and creepy. This consists of reading signs. Pay as much attention to the person you’re talking to as possible, and look at their body language, it will give you a lot of information about how they’re feeling. Don’t stay too long if you start to notice they aren’t into it. Arms crossed, distracted eye contact, and forced conversation are all signals that it might be time to get out. Remember to not be too touchy, especially if they aren’t touchy back. Last but not least, have a game plan. You’ve got to have a reason to approach someone, otherwise it will definitely come off as creepy. Don’t try to hard with those pick up lines, unless they’re cheesy or adorable; just be yourself. And if all else fails, always have a way out! Good luck!!
