The Springfield College men’s basketball team fell short 72-63 to Emerson at Blake Arena Wednesday night in the NEWMAC quarterfinals.

Up 59-58 with just over three minutes remaining, the Lions went on a 13-5 run to close out the game. Emerson had three players score in double figures as Michael Thorpe led with 14 points. Tyson Hallowell and Austin Pinckney had 11 points each.

Josh Altman had a game-high 18 points while Josh Downes chipped in with 13 points.

The Pride fought hard all the way to the end but the Lions were able to pull away on a 9-0 run.

“We’ve been fighting it all year and we make mistakes and sometimes at crucial times that have been costly,” said head coach Charlie Brock. “It was no different tonight, we kind of sputtered offensively down the stretch and they (Emerson) got off on a run.”

Emerson is now 11-15 and heads to Babson on Saturday in the semifinals. Springfield finishes their 2015-16 season 11-15 overall and not the way they wanted to finish but Brock is always confident about the fight in his team.

“We never quit, they always play hard and we don’t do some things correctly but it’s never for lacking of wanting to do so.”
