Winning teams are typically comprised of strong leadership, talented players, and a work ethic that just won’t quit. With this definition in mind, the upcoming season for Springfield College softball should be one of great success.

“We’re working really hard. We’re very focused and we have a lot of talent,” said head coach Julie Perrelli. “At this point we’re kind of just trying to smooth out the wrinkles a little bit.”

Part of that process has consisted of working six newcomers into the mix. This has proven to be a seamless transition for all, the new members sharing the same attitudes and drive as the returners.

“They’re definitely adding to the team. They bring an extremely strong work ethic and a focused dynamic,” commented Perrelli.

The Pride had an influx of young talent, taking in four freshman, one of whom is filling a hole as the captain of the infield at shortstop, something that rarely happens on a college diamond.

“That’s a really big spot for a freshman,” said Perrelli. “Its fallen in that direction because of how everything has played out, and she’s doing very well there.”

This young talent will complement the already existing senior leadership. Veteran members Jenna Webb, Melissa Nelson, and Elizabeth Joseph have all been a part of the team since their freshman years. It was that year that the Pride took home the title of conference champions, something that they are hoping to mirror again this year.

“I’m really rooting for the seniors. They’re all such great people who have so much talent and work so hard, which is why I hope their final season is all that they imagined it to be. They really want all the other girls to be able to experience the same feeling they had when they won the conference,” said Perrelli.

With all three holding spots in the starting lineup – behind the plate, on the hot corner, and in left field – they play significant roles on the team. And with the prior taste of a championship title in their first year, this group of seniors is well equipped to lead the rest to another NEWMAC victory for the Pride.

Although they play in an extremely competitive conference, if their progress continues the way it has been, Coach Perrelli believes that they can play with anyone and that there is nothing stopping them from coming out on top.

“We need to continue to push ourselves if we want to be in the 1 or 2 spot come tournament time. And I think we can certainly do that if everything comes together the way it’s supposed to. We have so much talent, and when they’re on, they’re really really on. We just need to put all the pieces together. It’s a lot of fun to watch and they’re just a great group to be a part of.”
