In his first collegiate meet of his career, the Pride’s Connor Pennington opened some eyes by winning NEWMAC Diver of the Week.

Taking on Coast Guard back on October 28th, Pennington and the Pride looked to start off their season strong.  Although the team fell to Coast Guard 175-112, Pennington put on a remarkable display.

In the three-meter dive, Pennington scored a 294.25, earning him first place and outscoring second place by almost 80 points.

Later in the day, Pennington also took the one-meter dive by scoring a 311.90. Pennington cleared second place by almost 100 points. This strong performance secured his first NEWMAC Diver of the Week honor in the beginning of his young career.

“It’s an awesome feeling knowing I’m already helping out my team this early on in my career,” said Pennington.  “Winning this early in the season wasn’t something I was aiming for but this will let people know that I’m going to be a contender in the bigger meets later on in the season.”

As a freshman, Pennington’s impact is not only felt by his teammates but by his coach.

“Connor is already a big part of this team and he is just getting started,” said head Diving Coach Peter Avdoulos.  “He is a great talent and he really sets the tone for the rest of the team, whether at practice or in the meets.  His leadership is going to take this team a long way in the future.”

In his second meet, Pennington was challenged by a strong MIT squad.  In the three-meter dive he scored a 258.31, good for third place. On the one-meter board, Pennington continued his excellence by placing first with a score of 297.00.

“Connor was challenged today by a tough team,” noted Avdoulos.  “But come time for the championship meets, I have a good feeling he is going to be on top for both boards.”

The Pride’s next meet comes Friday, November 17th at 6 p.m. when they host Williams.  Pennington will hope to continue his success and build towards the more important meets later on in the season.
