PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Sunday afternoon the Springfield College Men’s Soccer team put a bow on their appearance in the Best Western Plus Cardinal Classic by beating host Plattsburgh 2-1 and capturing a tournament title.
The win moved the Pride’s record to 2-0 in the young 2018-2019 season and was another mark in the win column for new head coach Tommy Crabill.
It took longer than in their game yesterday, but for the second consecutive day Springfield was able to put up the first goal of the game. At the 34:37 mark of the first half, Brad Deckel was able to score a header off an assist from Xavi Arroyo.
The goal was the first of the season for Deckel, and it was his strong performance on Sunday that helped lead the Pride.
Just 4:18 into the second half, Deckel was able to find senior Christian Schneider and he scored to give his club a 2-0 lead.
The two goals were enough for Springfield. They allowed one goal in the 83rd minute on a penalty kick, but still held on for the 2-1 win.
Deckel was the star on offense as he compiled three points on the day and Stewart Frank was in net again and recorded three saves. The Pride had 19 shots in the game (9 on goal) compared to only 11 (4 on goal) for Plattsburgh.
Deckel took home offensive MVP honors for the tournament and Frank was awarded defensive MVP. Andrew Ma, a freshman, earned a spot on the All-Tournament team.
Next up for the Pride is a trip to Brandeis University on September 5th to take on the Owls. That game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
