Springfield College field hockey was handed its first loss of the season by the Keene State Owls, Saturday afternoon at Stagg Field. A flat start from the Pride allowed the Owls to score two goals within the first five minutes of the game, leading to a final score of 5-2.

A tough start in goal for senior Emmalie Drake gave freshman Gwen Smith the opportunity to sub into the game at the beginning of the second half. It was the freshman’s first appearance in goal for the pride. Smith played a stellar second half, with eight saves on ten shots, adding up for a save percentage of 80 percent.

When asked about the substitution head coach Melissa Sharpe said, “We were trying to keep us in the game.” Although the Pride lost, Smith helped keep the Pride within the game for the second half. “I just took it as I was playing with them in practice,” said Smith. The freshman kept her cool and looked ready for the faster paced college play.

Keene State came out on fire to begin the game. Sophomore’s Kayla Klein and Nina Bruno accounted for the team’s five goals. Klein finished the game with a hat trick while Bruno accounted for two goals.

Sophomore goalkeeper Rachel Loseby was the key to the Owls victory as she allowed 1 goal on 9 shots, and was taken out with ten minutes remaining. Loseby’s tactic of coming out far on corners allowed her to save many shots that may have been taken by Pride players if she had stayed between the bars.

Again, the presence of freshman Holly Rivers was felt as she scored her fourth goal of the season and now has at least one goal scored in three consecutive games. The Pride will look for Rivers to keep producing goals throughout the season along with their veteran’s Taylor Conley and Amanda Nusbaum.

Springfield (3-1) will take the next week off and begin play back at Stagg Field on Saturday the 15th against the Husson Eagles at 11am.
