It has been a huge last few weeks for Springfield men’s basketball coach Charlie Brock.
Brock was named president of the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) on Monday and was named the Glen Robinson Division III Coach of the Year on Wednesday.
Brock succeeds University of Kansas head men’s basketball coach Bill Self as President of the association.
Notable members of the association’s board of directors includes Kentucky’s John Calipari, Michigan State’s Tom Izzo and the University of South Carolina’s Frank Martin.
Per the association’s website, the NABC strives to do the following:
- To promote the ideals of integrity, sportsmanship and teamwork among men’s basketball coaches and the players whom they coach;
- To unify coaches on issues pertaining to basketball at all levels;
- To provide member services which address the needs of the coach professionally, emotionally, financially, physically and spiritually;
- To encourage basketball coaches to serve as community outreach agents who elevate moral, ethical and educational values;
- To enlighten the general public, media, institutional educators and athletic administrators to the fact that coaches are good for the sport and the young people whom they serve;
- To work with the legislative arm of the NCAA on issues that affect basketball and intercollegiate athletics, in particular identifying issues that not only benefit the student-athlete but also the ability of the coaching staff to work effectively and beneficially within the institution.
Brock is a strong advocate in developing honors to recognize men’s college basketball student-athletes for their success in the classroom, working closely with the NABC Committee on Academics. Brock is the facilitator of the Pride’s Literacy Awards program, which is funded by the Springfield Office of Community Development. The purpose of the program is to promote the importance of reading to children, targeting first through third grades.

In addition to his recognition off the court, Brock was recognized for his stellar job leading the Pride this season on the court by receiving the Glenn Robinson National Coach of the Year Award on Wednesday.
The award is named after Franklin & Marshall men’s basketball coach, and winningest coach in Division III men’s basketball history, Glenn Robinson.
Brock led the Pride to the programs first-ever NEWMAC regular season title and national semifinals this season. Springfield finished the year with a record of 22-9. The win total ties Brock’s highest win count in his 20 years at the helm of the program.
