As the crowd flooded the court to celebrate the men’s volleyball team capturing the national title on Saturday night, Springfield College President Mary-Beth Cooper could finally breathe.
After what she described as a day filled with nerves, Cooper watched the Pride capture the Division III men’s volleyball national championship, a moment that shifted from anticipation to overwhelming relief and excitement.
“I was a nervous wreck all day,” said Cooper. “I’m so happy for them. I’m so proud of them and everything they’re doing.”
Inside Blake Arena, the atmosphere matched the excitement of the moment. The crowd brought the energy, creating what Cooper compared to a “sixth man” advantage that propelled the team during the match.
“The energy was palpable,” she said. “That kind of support makes such a difference.”
For Cooper, the championship also carried a deeper sense of success within the program. Earlier in the day, members of past title-winning teams, including alumni from the 2016 and 2017, connected at her home, showing their support for the 2026 group.
“I remember when they won, and now they’re back to support this team,” Cooper said. “That’s what makes this so special. It’s not just one moment. It’s a tradition.”
That tradition is built on leadership and talent. Head coach Charlie Sullivan’s coaching continues to morph the program’s identity, something Cooper believes was evident in the championship run.
“He is the epitome of positive, motivational energy,” she said. “He believed in them, and that belief made this happen. He’s integral to all of this.”
The title marks a return to the top for Springfield, proving its place among the nation’s top programs. But for Cooper, this championship is also an example of the greatness that lies ahead.
“It’s been a couple years, and now we’re back in it ,” said. “All the possibilities ahead are great. This is a good start.”
As the celebration commenced, Cooper kept her message clear.
“I just hope they enjoy the night,” she said.
