Reflecting on the match and senior night, Springfield Graduate Assistant Coach, Jojo Gonzalez, praised the senior’s impact throughout the season. “[It’s been] huge. I mean, these guys lay the foundation for us. There’s 30-40 guys in a room, and when we say something, they do it,” said Gonzalez. “They set the tone on the work pacing. They have a tremendous impact on the guys coming in, especially the first-years. It’s like wisdom; they give them advice and let them know it’s ok to lose.”
Coach Gonzalez also spoke on how the seniors from this year have helped the program grow and transition into what it is now. “The ball hasn’t even started rolling down the hill, and they’re just continuing every day to get better and better,” he said. “Not only themselves as wrestlers, but people as well. Tremendous people to talk to, communicate with, and ask questions.”
Senior Night in Blake Arena was a fitting tribute to the departing athletes, combining intense competition with heartfelt farewells. The victory not only secured Springfield a win on the mat, but also marked the beginning of a new chapter for the team as they continue to forge ahead in the wrestling arena.
