Springfield College’s William Blizard Art Gallery has captured the warmth and nostalgia of summer in its latest exhibition, “Summer Snaps, Scrapbook Style!” The exhibit, which ran from Sept. 9th through the 26th, showcases a collection of artwork from students, faculty and staff. The display, housed on the second floor of Blake Hall, invites visitors to reflect on the small but meaningful moments of summer, framed through the lens of the community’s diverse creative talents.
From the moment visitors enter the gallery, they are greeted with summer imagery arranged in the style of a family scrapbook. This choice of presentation is a cherished form of storytelling ingrained in popular culture for generations. The idea of scrapbooking assembles snippets of our lives in a way that we can revisit and reflect on, and fits perfectly with the mood of this exhibition. It’s a space for artists and viewers to pause and celebrate the warmth of summer, even as the cooler days of fall approach.
The artwork ranges from traditional tools like paint, pen and pencil, to more modern forms of visual expression, such as photography captured with smartphones or cameras. From a snapshot of a sunset by the beach to a chalk drawing of a summer barbecue, each piece contributes to the theme of shared experiences. Summer is a time of year that brings people together, and this exhibit captures that essence in many forms.
“As gallery director, I create the exhibition schedule about six months to a year in advance. It takes a fair amount of organizing and pre-production to set things up,” said Kellie Murphy, Head Director of the William Blizzard Gallery. “I usually curate the shows and we sometimes have guest curators. Folks are welcome to email me with any ideas or thoughts they may have and I will take them under consideration.”
The gallery will close with a reception on Thursday, Sept. 26th, from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. The reception offers visitors one last opportunity to experience the summer memories that their peers have shared. More than just a viewing of the artwork, this gathering celebrates creativity, community and connection.
In thanking the Springfield College students, faculty and staff who contributed to the exhibit, the William Blizard Gallery shows the importance of community engagement in the arts. Clearly this isn’t just a gallery show but a collaborative project highlighting the power of shared creativity. As visitors walk through the exhibition, they aren’t just looking at art; they’re witnessing the stories, memories, and emotions that tie the Springfield College community together.
