Springfield College has a rising star walking on its campus. Last year, junior Adam Ziewacz decided that he no longer wanted to pursue his dreams of playing basketball and figured he might as well play golf. He had played a bit in high school, making the sport a reasonable next choice after his first choice did not pan out. This turned out to be a great choice. In his sophomore year, Ziewacz won both Rookie of the Year and Golfer of the Year for the NECC, helping to lead the Springfield squad into the national spotlight during a competition in Florida last spring. But, what will he do for an encore?
When asked about feeling extra pressure this year, as opposed to last year, Ziewacz said he can feel it.
“It’s a rebuilding year for the team,” said Ziewacz, whose Pride team lost four seniors last year. “There is a lot of pressure on Kyle DiFranco and I with all the new guys.”
So far this season, Ziewacz is not allowing the pressure to affect his play, as he was selected as the NECC Men’s Golfer of the week, last week, after a solid weekend of play. Even with a rebuilding team, Ziewacz was able to help lead the Pride to a victory with a third-place finish at the NECC Invitational at Wedgewood Pines Country Club.
The true test for Ziewacz and the Springfield squad will come this weekend at the NECC Championships, which will be held at Wedgewood Pines Country Club as well. It will certainly be a challenge for the team to earn another automatic bid into the NCAAs this year. With three weeks left in the fall season, it will be exciting to see what the rising star will do next.
