Gabby Gaudreault had a fantastic week and overall season for the Springfield women’s track and field team. The Springfield women took second place in their last meet, but Gaudreault had an amazing day by winning multiple events. Gaudreault won the 800 meter with a time of 2:16.31. She also helped her team win the 4×200 (1:47.67) and 4×400 (4:06.38) relays. Gaudreault’s successful day helped her to become the leading scorer for the Springfield women’s track and field team. While St. Lawrence won the meet overall, Gaudreault’s successes should not be overshadowed by the loss. Next Saturday, Feb. 2, SC will host another indoor track meet at the SC Field House.
Q: Do you view indoor track as a team or individual sport?
A. Track is both a team and individual sport. Each runner has their own individual goals to accomplish, but there are also team goals that we work towards as well.
Q. What were your personal goals in the preseason, and are you close to reaching them?
A. My number one goal for this season is to make it to the NCAA Division III Track and Field Championship meet for the 800m and the 4x400m relay.
Q. Being in so many events do you have to train differently for each event?
A. Most of the events that I run are sprints, so I don’t have different training techniques for each one. I do a combination of speed workouts and distance running that prepare me to run anything from a 200m dash to the 800m.

Springfield College’s wrestling team captured their second straight NEWA Dual wrestling championship and John Gabordi was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament. Gabordi and Springfield defeated any opponents that came their way. Springfield defeated WPI, Plymouth State, Johnson & Wales, and Wesleyan. Springfield defeated Plymouth State in the first round. After that, SC knocked off WPI 49-0 in the second round. In the heavyweight bout, Gabordi took down Joseph Szerszunowicz. In the third round, SC defeated Johnson & Wales 24-10, and Gabordi defeated George Madosky. Springfield defeated first place Wesleyan in the championship round 19-18, and again Gabordi won this time by taking down Austin Frank. Gabordi went undefeated in his matches, and was a key contributor to the SC victory in the tournament.
Q: Do you consider wrestling an individual or team sport?
A. It’s a mix between the two for sure. When I’m out on the mat I’m obviously by myself, but I’m not just wrestling for me. The team works hard as a unit to be successful, and I’m a cog in the machine.
Q: How far can the Springfield wrestling team go?
A. Our goals are high. We finished 16th in the nation last year with two All-Americans, and we would love to finish in the top 10 this year with three or four All-Americans and five or six national qualifiers.
Q: What are your personal goals for this season, and how do you plan to reach them?
A. My personal goals are to win the region and get to nationals and become an All-American. It’s a long road ahead, but I know if I keep working hard I can get there.
