With just nine days remaining until the 2012 Spring Concert, Springfield College and SC Backstage were informed of some disappointing news Wednesday afternoon.
Gym Class Heroes unfortunately will not be able to perform as expected on April 14 because lead singer Travis “Travie” McCoy has been asked to perform at the 2012 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony that same day in Cleveland, Ohio.
The Spring Concert will still go on though with Timeflies now expected to become the headlining act for the performance. The show is also now free of charge to all Springfield College students, but due to the capacity of Blake Arena, students still need to pick up tickets ahead of time, according to Assistant Director of Student Activities and SC Backstage advisor Annie Warchol.
Anyone who has purchased a ticket for the concert will be given a full refund, added Warchol. She also stressed that McCoy and Gym Class Heroes are clearly upset about cancelling their Springfield College concert but simply could not turn down a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
“I am very disappointed that Gym Class Heroes will not be able to perform this year for our Spring Concert,” Warchol said. “While speaking with the management of Gym Class Heroes, they are equally upset about this conflict.
“Performing at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that very few musicians have had the privilege to be a part of, and he can not say no to this other engagement.”
McCoy, who has also performed at other prominent events such as the NBA All-Star Game, is currently working on a letter to the Springfield College community said Warchol, and The Student plans on publishing the letter in next week’s edition.
Warchol also said that Gym Class Heroes has already said they will reimburse SC for this last minute cancellation in some way, shape or form.
Students will certainly be disappointed, yet it is understandable for McCoy to take this new offer after taking a look at this year’s 2012 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees that features Guns N’ Roses, Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Beastie Boys and many more.
