Op-Eds Opinion

Hot Chelle Rae not meeting Pop Punk Standards

Some say pop punk is dead. I don’t believe this to be true. As of recently, more and more of this catchy genre was tackling the radio airwaves. The charge is led by the band Hot Chelle Rae. They’ve produced recent hits like “Tonight Tonight” and “I Like it Like That.”

Hot Chelle Rae is originally from Nashville, Tenn. Their first work, Lovesick Electric, debuted in 2009. They weren’t noticed until their double platinum hit, “Tonight Tonight,” was released in 2011.

Now that their name has hit national airwaves, they’re looking to shoot up the pop charts with their new album, Whatever. This album is all right; it’s nothing too out of the ordinary. If you’re a fan of their first hits, then know that those may be the best songs you’re going to get off this album. I was happy to see that they have Bei Meajor, a rising rap star, on their album. Other songs feature Demi Lovato and New Boyz.

On a personal note, pop punk isn’t dead, but it’s nowhere near where it used to be. The days of Fall Out Boy, Panic at the Disco and All American Rejects are yet to be revived. It was the genre of my middle school years and it would be nice to see it go back to the way it was. I recommend keeping the singles you may already have by this band and saving some money on the rest of the album.
