Packing a bagged lunch. Assembling a hygiene kit. Cleaning out closets. While these are all simple tasks, spending 15 minutes to do them could make or break someone else’s life. Springfield College is providing students and faculty the opportunity to do just that.
The Humanics in Action Club, Y-Club, and Center for Service and Leadership are sponsoring Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, which runs from Monday, November 12 to Thursday, November 15. Each day, there will be a different event on campus to help benefit those in the Springfield community.
“These events are extremely important, as they will get Springfield College actively involved in serving others around the community who are in need,” explained junior Alex Perrone, Vice President of the Humanics in Action Club. “Our community will be directly affected by the support we are giving them through this week, and we aim to continue our efforts on the campus to support our community throughout the entire year.”
The events are as follows-
Monday, November 12: the “Hunger Banquet” will run from 12 to 1:30 p.m. in Judd West, which is a poverty simulation where students and staff can take on the role of someone either living in low, middle, or high income classes.
Tuesday, November 13: “Bagged Lunches in Cheney” will run from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., where students will be able to make bagged lunches to be donated to the Fishes and Loaves Food Pantry.
Wednesday, November 14: “Toiletry Kit Making” will run from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the Campus Union lobby, where students and staff can help make hygiene kits to benefit the those who attend Friends of the Homeless Shelter in Springfield, M.A.
Thursday, November 15: “Donations for Winter Clothing” will be collected in the Center for Service and Leadership, which is located in room No. 322 of the Union, where students can deliver clothing items to be donated to the Friends of the Homeless thrift shop.
No registration is necessary, in order to participate, simply go to the location at the appropriate time. To volunteer for these events, or ask questions, contact Perrone via email at humanicsclub@springfieldcollege.edu.
