The Pride men’s basketball team started their season on a good note Tuesday night. The team won their season opener on the road against Western New England 80-69.

The Pride started the game trying to utilize the three-point line, but found no success. Eventually the gameplan shifted around the halfway mark of the first half. The team started to attack the Golden Bears defense with shots closer to the rim and better ball movement around the three-point line.

The Pride’s shooting was abysmal from beyond the arch, going 0-for-11. However, they were able to make up for their shortcomings from behind the three-point with efficiency at the free throw line. The team finished the game with 24 made free throws, compared to Western New England who finished with eight.

Freshman guard Jake Ross looked comfortable to say the least in his first college game. He scored eight of the Pride’s first 12 points and finished with 29.

“Coming together as a team and believing in your teammates makes the job easier for everyone,” said Ross. “I think what worked well for me was going to the rim and attacking in transition, just trying to get easy buckets.”

Head coach Charlie Brock was happy with the patience shown by his players, and the way his players fought back when the score got tight.

“I liked that we competed, even when [Western New England] got back in it, we kept competing.” he said. “During the times we were patient offensively we were getting great shots. I think the guys are learning, when you are patient, good things will come.”

Brock was also pleased with what he saw from players in his second unit.

“Bench players are a huge factor, and I think Stanley Davis (nine points, three rebounds, three assists) had an outstanding game coming off the bench,” he said. “Ben Diamond also did a great job coming off the bench and playing his role.”

The Pride will now look to put together a few wins this Friday in the Bridgewater State Tip-Off Classic. Their first game will be against Dean College at 7:30 PM.
