WESTFIELD – Saturday afternoon Springfield College men’s soccer got back to their winning ways with a 1-0 victory over the Westfield State Owls. The game marked the Pride’s fourth straight road game to open their season and was a good bounce back from their loss to No. 4 ranked Brandeis on Wednesday.

The game was a stalemate up until the 77th minute, then the Pride got their break through. A corner kick wound up in a loose ball and sophomore Justin Breedlove put it home to give the Pride a 1-0 lead.

The assist on the play went to Keith Dixon and Joseph Olayneck. The goal, which came at the 77:22 mark, was the first of the year for Breedlove and it wound up being the deciding factor in the game.

Springfield’s defense, which has allowed only three goals in four games this season, pitched their second shutout of the year.

Stewart Frank was in net one again and he recorded 4 saves on the afternoon. Springfield recorded 19 shots, nine of which were on goal to only nine shots for the Owls (four on goal.) The Pride also held a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.

The Pride (3-1) play once again tomorrow in the first home game of the 2018-2019 season on Brock-Affleck field. It is a 3:30 matchup with Stevens college.
