Now, there is some debate between my generation and the people of my mom’s generation who say leggings aren’t pants. But, if leggings aren’t pants then what are they?
Are we supposed to wear them with neon shorts and leg warmers like they did in the 80’s? I’d rather not.
The girls in my generation wear leggings as pants simply because they are worlds more comfortable than jeans. They can also be dressed up with a sweater and boots or dressed down with a hoodie and sneakers. Quite simply put, they are the most versatile pants around.
That being said, a lot of moms ask their daughters why they think it is okay to wear them as pants. In some cases, that question is understandable, because not all leggings are created equal.
We’ve all had that horrific moment when you look at the girl in front of you on the stairs and you can see clear through her leggings and, well, you get the picture. Those leggings were not meant to be pants, so the moms win on that one.
However, not all leggings are see-through; in fact stores now are even selling insulated leggings. I have a pair of fleece lined cheetah print leggings from Macy’s and they keep me just as warm, if not warmer, than my jeans do.
These kinds of thick leggings can absolutely be worn as pants. When buying leggings that you intend to wear as pants, it is imperative that you go into the dressing room, try them on, and then do the legging test.
What is the legging test you ask? Well, it is when you put the leggings on, and bend over with your butt facing the mirror. Then look back into the mirror to see if you can see through them while you’re bent over. If you can’t, then you have successfully found leggings you can wear as pants.
If you can see through them, then you can either put them back where you found them or buy some retro neon shorts to wear over them like your mom did.
So to recap, ladies, you can prove your mom wrong when it comes to leggings, if you know how to find the right pair. If you fail to find the perfect pair, then your mom wins the leggings-aren’t-pants battle. Good luck
