Men’s Soccer: Springfield College 6, Lasell 0:

Junior Curtis Bolduc (two goals and two assists) opened the scoring at 34:03 in the first half, and the Pride men’s soccer team never looked back in their wire-to-wire season opening win over Lasell.

Bolduc notched his second score of the half at the 40:30 after he beat a defender to find the back of the net. Senior Taylor Gilfoy (two goals and one assist) scored twice in the second half – once off of a rebound and once courtesy of a Bolduc cross – to secure the lead. Senior Luke Alvaro and sophomore Ian Zacharewicz each added a goal. The Pride dominated in total shots (29 to 7) as well as shots on goal (16 to 5).

Senior goalkeeper Zach Richard made one save in his first win of the season.

Next game: September 4, at Western Connecticut State.

Women’s Volleyball: Springfield College 3, Rochester Institute of Technology 1; Springfield College 3, Gordon 0.

Springfield College women’s volleyball opened up it’s season with two wins at the Springfield College Women’s Volleyball Invitational after defeating RIT (3-1) and Gordon (3-0) on Friday night.

After splitting the first two sets in game one, the Pride rattled off two straight set wins to take down RIT 3-1.

Springfield took a 2-1 lead after blowing out RIT 25-8 in set No. 3. The set included a 6-0 and a 5-0 run from the Pride. A Jennifer Hurwitz kill capped off a 4-0 run from Springfield to end the third set.

A 25-21 fourth set gave the Pride their first match win of the season. Seniors Lauren Holt (13 kills) and Kayleigh Helgesen (10 kills) each totaled double-digit kills for Springfield.

In the second game against Gordon, the Pride pulled off a clean sweep and won the first three sets (25-10, 25-16, 25-12) to take the match. Holt recorded double digit kills once again with 10, while Daniela Detore and Marnae Mawdsley each added 13 assists.

Next game: September 3, Framingham State at Springfield College.

Women’s Soccer: Springfield College 2, Westfield State 0.

All it took was two goals, but that was all the Pride’s women’s soccer team needed on Friday to take down Westfield State 2-0.

Freshman Elise Leavitt led off the scoring with an unassisted strike at 41:59 in the first half for her first career goal. Junior Monique Marcelino doubled the lead early in the second half (52:02) with an unassisted score of her own.

Junior Ciara Boucher made three saves in the net for her first win of the season.

Next game: September 3, Eastern Connecticut at Springfield College.

Football: Western New England 26, Springfield College 10.

In a cross-city match up with the Pynchon Saw Traveling Trophy on the line, it was the Golden Bears who came out with the hardware.

Western New England hopped out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter courtesy of a Mark Dietrich touchdown and a Vinny Lalumia field goal. The Pride responded in the second quarter with a rushing touchdown from junior Jake Eglintine.

But trailing 10-7 was as close as the Pride would get. The Golden Bears scored again in the second to pull ahead 16-7 before a field goal from sophomore Blake Heller pulled Springfield closer, 16-10. Another Lalumia field goal in the second followed by an Anthony Service touchdown in the final quarter put the final points on the board for Western New England.

The Pride racked up 189 yards of rushing on the ground, but were only able to push the ball into the end zone once. Junior Christian Zotti recorded two tackles for losses – including one sack – while he, fellow junior Dom Traversa and senior Kenny Calaj each recorded 10 tackles.

Next game: September 4, St. John Fisher at Springfield College.
