This weekend, the NEWMAC women’s basketball tournament hits Springfield College, as the Pride enter as the number one seed and the favorite to win it all. This season has seen it all, from dominating performances to close call victories. One of the biggest stories, however, has been the emergence of Heather Lewis. She had a big week last week as the Pride clinched the number one seed, and I caught up with her to get some thoughts.

Q. You had ten points in the clincher over Mt. Holyoke last week, what was your mindset heading into that game?
A. Going into the Mt. Holyoke game we knew that they were in the bottom of the conference, but would give us a fight.  My team and I as a whole went into the game with the mindset of shutting them down early and playing good basketball.  We knew we had to keep getting better every game in order to prepare for the NEWMAC Tournament!

Q. Thoughts on your season from an individual stand-point? You’ve been a huge impact player for this team so far.
A. This season I have started to play the way I always knew I could since freshman year.  I am playing confident and doing my best to contribute in many areas of the game.  I am looked to as a scorer on the team, but when my shot isn’t dropping I work hard to rebound and assist teammates.  I am happy with the way my team and I have played together this season.

For the third straight year, the Springfield College men’s basketball team enters the NEWMAC tournament with high expectations. One of the leaders is hard-working Tim Swenson, who single handedly changed the outcome of last Wednesday’s tilt Vs. Clark. I caught up with the athlete of the week himself to talk about his performance and more.

Q. You had a double-double against Clark last Wednesday and changed the momentum in that game, what did you like about your individual effort there?
A. I think that during the Clark game I just made a lot of the right decisions whenever I touched the ball. Getting my team mates involved is always something I’ve strived to do, as well as score when I have the opportunity to.

Q. I call the game for TV and always notice you diving after balls and playing a really hard game. What is it the drives you to play that kind of hard and almost desperate game where you deliver that kind of effort?
A. Playing in the post in our conference is a tough task and its a lot of work. Over the last three years I’ve learned the amount of effort it takes to compete at a high level and I always try to help my team win games by working hard.

Q. What does the preparation include for the NEWMAC tournament this coming weekend?
A. Preparing for NEWMAC includes us tightening up some screws defensively, and coming up with some different looks offensively. At this point in the season, everyone knows how to play each other so its just going to come down to who’s the better team on that day.
