It is that wonderful time of year again. Things are starting to heat up both outside on Alden Street, and inside the gyms where Springfield College athletes are entering late season play.
Spring sports are also getting ready to kick into high gear, and the sports’ schedule has never looked more entertaining.
MEN’S LACROSSE: The Pride opened their season on Wednesday night as the No. 14 team in the preaseason Division III rankings and took care of business with a 22-7 drubbing of Gordon College on the road.
Led by preseason All-Americans Ryon Lynch and Robert Maher, Springfield got their season off on a strong foot. Lynch finished with a team-high seven points (two goals, five assists) while Robert Maher made five saves in 45 minutes of game action to earn the win.
Sophomore Sean Doolady got the start at the faceoff and dominated his opposition by going 17-for-19 with eight ground balls and a goal. Sophomore Dylan Sheehan tallied four goals in the win.
MEN’S BASKETBALL: The Pride earned the third seed in this weekend’s NEWMAC tournament with a 64-49 win on the road against Wheaton last Saturday. The Pride will face MIT at 3 p.m. on Saturday at WPI in Worcester, Mass.
The last time Springfield saw the Engineers they dropped a 68-59 decision on the road on Feb. 2. This came just weeks after Springfield defeated MIT in Blake Arena, 56-53.
Should SC defeat MIT again on Saturday, they would earn a spot in the NEWMAC Championship game on Sunday at 1 p.m. against either top-seeded WPI, or Babson, who defeated Clark to earn their spot in the semifinals.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: The women lost their final contest of the season, 64-48, on Saturday to Babson on senior day. Meghan Biondolillo and Briana Freymuth scored eight and seven points respectively in their final game for SC.
