Joe Gamache earned his first win of the season behind six strong innings as the Springfield College baseball team comfortably handled Elms College at Archie Allen Field on Tuesday, 8-1.

Gamache put together his best outing of the season, allowing one earned run on five hits while striking out four. Offensively, the Pride was led by freshman Jack Cooney, who had three hits and four RBI.

After Chad Shade started the game with a triple, Cooney drove him in to plate the first run of the contest. Mark Joao reached on a walk, and Jake Gleason drove in Cooney from second with a single a couple batters later.

Cam Rivest followed up with another RBI single to make it 3-0. With the bases loaded, Pete Marsicano hit into a fielder’s choice that scored Gleason to give the Pride a four run lead.

Shade led off in the second inning as well and reached on an error. After stealing second and third, Joao drove him in with an RBI single. Again in the third, Cooney came through with a two-out single that scored two runners to open up a 7-0 lead.

Gamache gave up his only run in the fifth inning. After allowing a double to begin the frame, consecutive singles brought the runner around to chip in to a seven run deficit.

However, Springfield responded in the bottom half. With two outs, Brandon Russo singled and stole second. After Shade drew a walk, Cooney singled to bring in Russo for his fourth RBI of the game.

Jordan Elkary and Zach Kerr combined for the last three innings and gave up just two hits to seal Springfield’s 22nd win of the year, its most since 2001.

Shade finished with a 1-for-3 game, stealing three bases and crossing home plate three times. The first five hitters in the lineup accounted for seven of the Pride’s 11 hits. Springfield also drew nine walks in the contest.

The Pride plays at Archie Allen again this Thursday as it duels Amherst College. First pitch is at 3:30 p.m.
