SPRINGFIELD — The Springfield College field hockey team (7-3) took on Mt. Holyoke College (5-6) Tuesday night at Stage Field in a cold and rainy matchup. The game was postponed 30 minutes due to thunder and teams had shortened warm up times prior to the start of the game, although the Pride came out on top with a dominant 6-0 win.
Springfield was on top fast, as freshman Kyra Ashe smacked in one of her two goals on the day in the first four minutes of the game. The goal was assisted by senior Amanda Nusbaum, who played a major role in the tempo of the game.
When asked about the hot start Head Coach Melissa Sharpe responded with laughter, “I think it was the dance party.”
Ashe again scored 15 minutes later as the Pride took a commanding 2-0 lead. The Pride began adding to their lead as they scored one more goal in the first half to take a 3-0 lead heading into halftime.
Springfield added three more in the second half. One from Amanda Nusbaum, another from Kirsten Oliver and one more from Rachel Curtis. Nusbaum added four more points to her season total and now has 24 on the season.
The senior currently has two more points than she did last season. With eight more regular season games to go Nusbaum will continue to add to her outstanding senior season.
Springfield’s defense was great yet again as goalkeeper Emmalie Drake added her second shutout of the season.
The Pride looked to be the dominant team from the start. Even after the late start the Pride had full control of the game and didn’t take their foot off of the gas.
“Mentally that’s a lot to persevere through… It speaks a lot to the team,” Sharpe said
Springfield will take on Smith College Friday night on Stagg Field at 6 p.m.
