Springfield College men’s soccer makes history with No. 18 national ranking

Pride men’s soccer has been writing itself into the history books since head coach Steffen Siebert took over at the helm of the program in 2012. On the individual side of things, forward Danny Murphy broke the program record in 2016 for assists in a season with 16. In that same season, forward Luke Alvaro ended his Springfield career at No. 3 alltime for goals scored. On the team side of things, the Pride won its third ever NEWMAC title last year by defeating Wheaton, 3-1.

Continuing its historic performance into this year, for the first time in Division III program history, the Pride is ranked in the Top-20 nationally by the United Soccer Coaches. The team currently sits at No. 18 in the country. For context, Tufts, the team the Pride lost to in the first round of the NCAA tournament last year, is ranked No. 3.

Junior forward Christian Schneider, who is second on the team in points with 10, is proud to be part of such a historic team.

“It feels amazing to make history with the team. Each year we improve and we have made history in different aspects each year. It’s nice to keep adding on to that legacy with how good our team is becoming.”

Schneider may be happy to be part of such a great team, but he admits that rankings don’t automatically win you a national championship.

“Our main focus right now is the conference. We realize that the conference is what is going to bring us to the tournament – not really all the other games,” said Schieder. “ Coach [Siebert] emphasizes that we are starting to get recognition for all the hard work we’ve put in. Because we’ve always known that we can compete at the highest level in Division III, but now it’s nice to know that everyone else in the division knows too.”

If the Pride continue at this pace, there may be a few more individual milestones to put into the record book, and maybe one ultimately important team milestone that only one team can acquire – a National Championship.
