Springfield College Public Safety Moves Location

Wednesday, the entire Springfield College Department of Public Safety made the long-awaited move from Marsh Memorial to the more spacious building, formerly occupied by Facilities and Campus Services, on Portsmouth Street.

Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students, David Braverman, sent out an email to all students informing them of the change.
“The department has outgrown it’s current facilities and this move will provide the necessary additional space to most effectively run its operations,” said Braverman in his email. “Additionally, all functions that report to the Department of Public Safety, including the Respite Center, Card Access, Transportation, and student EMTs will be housed in that same location on Portsmouth Street, improving service to our students, staff, and visitors.”

Although Public Safety is no longer in the middle of campus, the new location adds a presence to a part of campus that features on-and-off campus housing, as well as new property the school has purchased.

“Quite honestly, it will probably be faster to reach where we need to go without getting off on-campus roads,” said Chief of Police, Judy Jackson. “It’s a little more direct.”

Some students have raised concerns about its location, however Jackson mentioned that shuttles and student patrol could be used to escort students to the new location.
