Across the country, college campuses go quiet as Easter weekend arrives. For most college students, this signals time for them to travel back home and spend time with family.

For the members of the Springfield College Track team, it was time for them to head down to Mahwah, New Jersey, for the Ramapo Invitational to open the spring season.

The men’s team was led by Freshman Josh Silvester who took third place in the triple jump with a score of 13.52 meters. The 4×100-meter relay team, consisting of Sophomores Tyler Hansen, DeShaun Dias, Eric McCracken and Freshman Willem Van-Zyl, placed second with a time of 43.52 seconds. Senior Whit Devaux (55.11 Meters) and Sophomore Tom Callis (53.17 Meters) rounded out the team by taking first and second in the javelin throw.

The men finished in third place out of 17 teams with a total score of 105.5 points.

Members of the team push each other throughout the season to improve their performances.

“It’s nice having someone like Whit who challenges me and pushes me to improve my technique because we are so close in distance,” said Callis.

For the women, they also find motivation from the success of others and try to build off of it.

“Our team is supportive all around,” said Junior Kristen Madeia. “I think we all try and encourage each other and find motivation from everyone’s successes.”

Freshman Paige Shaughnessy led the women’s team by winning the pole vault event by clearing 2.90 meters. Senior Courtney Luscier continued the women’s success by winning the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.36 seconds. Junior Kristen Madeia (2:24.21) and Freshman Abigail Murdock (2:27.36) rounded out the team by taking second and third in the 800-meter run.

The women finished in a tie for second place with a total score of 100.5 points.

The Pride will be back in action at the AIC Invitational on Saturday, April 7.
