The time length of two seasons ago does not vary from team-to-team, yet the 2014-2015 Springfield College Pride (17-6, 12-2) women’s basketball team has made it seem like an eternity, as they picked up another win against the Babson College Beavers (15-7, 11-3), 62-42. The NEWMAC contest took place in Blake Arena on Wednesday in front of 400 spectators.
The Pride eclipsed the 60-point mark, yet again, with three players in double figures. Forward Jaimie Bickelhaupt, who is one of the captains, was responsible for 15 points in a game-high 34 minutes. Guards Lexi Windwer and Heather Lewis were able to join the club with 17 and 16 of their own, respectively.
The individual scoring surely aided the Pride with their eye-opening field goal percentage of 48 percent. Additionally, the Springfield College sunk half of their 14 shots from beyond the arc.
Although the Babson College had a better percentage from the charity stripe, they lost in nearly every other statistical category. Similar to the Pride, the Beavers had a surprising field goal and three-point percentage. However, it was not a pleasant surprise, as they shot an abysmal 28 percent from the field and 8.3 percent (1-12) on three-pointers.
Surely the saying is true that a win is a win and a loss is a loss, but even Coach Naomi Graves has to appreciate this one a little more.
With just two games remaining before the Pride attempt to defend their title in the NEWMAC tournament, theyare now in first place and more importantly control their own destiny the rest of the way.
As the Pride rack up win after win, the turnaround that this program has experienced can be safely called an all-time great in collegiate athletics.
During the 2012-2013 season, the Pride finished with just four total wins; Saturday at noon against the MIT Engineers (9-12, 5-7), the Pride go for their fourth win in a row for the third time this year.
A year ago they played the spoiler; now a season later they are determined to not give MIT that privilege, as the Engineers are currently No. 7 in the NEWMAC race.
“We know they’re a good team. We just need to continue to get better,” said Heather Lewis
On Saturday, the Pride will honor three seniors (Andrea Moschetta, Riley Fake, Jaimie Bickelhaupt), who serve as the team’s captains.
