In a dual meet between Springfield College and Wesleyan University, the Springfield wrestling team dominated on the mat securing a 37-7 victory. The crowd was ecstatic as the wrestlers battled for points in each weight class; but it was the standout performances of Jared Swartz, Ben Katz and a couple quick pins that stole the show.

In the opening bouts of the meet, the action unfolded with an electrifying display of skill and dominance. In the first match, featuring Jack Callahan and Chris Hong, both first-year competitors showcased their twitchy and fast-paced styles. After a brief stoppage, Callahan seized control, earning three crucial points at the 50-second mark. The intensity was compounded by two stoppages and at 1:29, the duel was still scoreless. However, Callahan’s persistence paid off, as he gained a decisive advantage and secured the victory in the second set by pinning Hong at 1:10, contributing to Springfield’s early 6-0 lead.

In the second match, Gianni Manginelli and Max Martinez took the stage, delivering another great performance. Manginelli asserted his dominance early on, scoring three points at 1:30 and extending his lead with four more points at 1:22. The excitement reached it’s peak when Manginelli executed a pin with just three seconds left in the first set, clinching the win and further boosting Springfield’s lead to an impressive 12-0. These back-to-back pin victories set a thrilling tone for the meet, showcasing the team’s determination and skill.

“It’s great for team points, and it certainly gets the momentum going,” Springfield head coach Jason Holder said on the fast start. “Super helpful to have someone like Jack Callahan come out, he has a lot of pins this year and he is really really valuable for us. Gianni, who’s a fifth-year senior, didn’t have it easy. Martinez from Wesleyan has had some big wins and is really tough, but Gianni has been doing more than well.”

Swartz, a seasoned graduate-student competing in the 157-pound weight class, demonstrated his prowess with a commanding performance that ended in a technical fall. Swartz’s strategic maneuvers and relentless pressure left his opponent, Jacob Poore, unable to counter his offensive onslaught.

The 157-pound wrestler not only secured a crucial victory, but also played a pivotal role in boosting Springfield’s team score. Swartz’s technical fall added five crucial points to the team’s total, extending the lead from 12-7 to 17-7.

“[Swartz] has been picking it up lately, and it has shown as he’s been a tremendous leader for us and his momentum will only continue,” Holder said.

As the meet continued, the spotlight shifted to the heavyweights, where Katz, a sophomore competing at 285 pounds, faced off against Wesleyan’s Kolten Gagnon. With the dual meet already in Springfield’s firm control, Katz aimed to put an exclamation point on the team’s victory.

In a high-stakes showdown, Katz displayed a combination of strength and technique, gaining control early in the match. As the clock ticked down, Katz executed a perfect pin, sealing the dual meet win for Springfield. The crowd erupted in cheers as Katz’s victory lap showcased the team’s unity and determination.

The Pride will hit the mats again on Sunday morning, Jan. 28 at the Johnson and Wales open in Providence, R.I.
