If you went into work as a waiter at Applebee’s and told your boss that your college put an old, tireless, ready-to-be-dumped Nissan on a tarp outside of a dorm building and let students swing away with a sledge hammer, your boss would probably be quite confused.
But hey, welcome to Springfield College, and welcome to Sti-Yu-Ka 2017.
That’s right, folks. After kicking off Springfield’s annual spring week with hamster ball soccer on the Naismith Green, the college followed up with an even better event on Tuesday. Plopped right outside of Abbey Hall was that old, gray Nissan. With “Sti-Yu-Ka” spray painted in bright green lettering across the four-door sedan, students were set to blow off some steam and relieve some stress that the end of the year typically brings.
Hacking away for more than three hours, a number of students gave the poor, innocent car an undeserved beating.
Students were jumping on the hood, cracking taillights, and just absolutely destroying this car more than it already was. People finally lived out the dream of doing something that would typically be beyond illegal; and boy was it fun.
“It was exhilarating,” said student Samie Al-Ziab. “It’s not every day you get to take a sledge hammer to a car, so it was a really cool experience.”
Although it will be difficult to top the car smash, Sti-Yu-Ka week will bring a number of other events to campus as the week comes to a close. Tonight, Cheney will be open late for “A Taste of Springfield.” On Friday, the Alumni Games will take place at 1 p.m. The spring concert is Saturday night, and the week concludes on Sunday with a carnival from 12-4 p.m. on Naismith Green.
