Coming off a decent performance at the Duke Nelson Invitational, the Springfield College golf team headed to Pittsfield, Mass., to compete in the Williams Invitational.
The Williams Invitational took place at the Taconic Golf Club in Pittsfield this past Saturday and Sunday. With a total of 620 strokes on the Par 71 layout, which totals 6,754 yards, the Pride finished 10th out of 18 total teams competing.
Host Williams took first place as a team, while also taking the top individual spot with not one, but two golfers. Dylan Dethier and Matt McCarron tied for first with an overall score of 149, after McCarron saw his birdie put lip out.
Williams’ “B” squad finished tied for fifth overall with a total score of 612, finishing even with Salem State.
Leading the Pride squad for the two-day invitational were veteran golfers Tom Sangeloty and Kyle DiFranco. Finishing with scores of 158, Sangeloty and DiFranco tied for SC’s top individual scores at 23rd place.
“We did alright. We could done better in this invitational…I think the weather elements altered our overall performance in Pittsfield,” said Sangeloty. “We have to focus on strengthening our mental game, eliminating big numbers and focusing on the team aspect of the game.”
Sangeloty credits graduate assistant Richard Trammel, who has been working with the team’s mental toughness, for their ability to maintain their composure after mistakes.
“Going into the conference championships I believe we are one best teams in the conference due to experience and mind-set on the game,” said Sangeloty
Two other golfers who stood out for the Pride were sophomore Adam Ziewacz and senior Chris Vincent, who tied for 54th with 167’s. Also placing in a tie for 76th for the Pride was senior Ryne McEvoy at 172.
“We definitely didn’t play up till our potential, struggled with the conditions, learned a lot and the team grew from it and we are ready for our most important tournament, the conferences,” said Ziewacz.
Springfield is now off until Oct. 6 and 7 when it plays in the New England Collegiate Conference tournament at the Passaconaway Country Club in Litchfield, N.H.
