The “Two Times Two” Spring Student Dance Concerts hits the center stage of the Fuller Arts Center, starting Thursday, April 25 at 8 p.m.
The show is put on by various dance students and the SC Dancers club. It is a culmination of a full semester of work, fully choreographed by the students themselves.
There are about 20 dances in each show. The two shows are split into four days. The first concert will be showing on Thursday and then Saturday at 2 p.m. The second one is being showed on Friday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m.
The first show can be considered a “Choreographic Adventure” according to Cynthia Nazzaro, the director of the show and a professor of Dance here at Springfield College. Inside this show, the students have made pieces from music and visual arts, and some even tell stories.
The second show is mainly produced by the SC Dancers club, choreographed by 11 different dancers, each working with a piece of music that the dancers have selected. They started this concert from an idea and grew from that. It is titled “Dancing Our Hearts.”
“They work really hard and they are very dedicated to their work,” said Nazzaro. “I know they’ve got their act together.”
The audience should expect to see very strong, technical dancers, who have an entertaining night planned.
Nazzaro explained that the audience should expect to think and feel when watching the performance. Each piece is very different and they suit different personalities.
“If you don’t care for one piece, even though I think you’ll like it all, but if you don’t, hold your seat, because the next piece will come along and be very different,” said Nazzaro.
The group has been practicing since January, but one thing that stands out is that every dancer performing this weekend has previously been in different shows here at Springfield College.
The dancers’ chemistry is really important for performing a show like this. The performers have different methods of “psyching each other up” to get ready. They encourage each other behind the stage, with posters and cards for a particular person that they are performing with.
“If you don’t have that [chemistry], your show suffers enormously,” Nazzaro said.
There are many different styles of dance, such as tap, contemporary, modern and jazz. Although there is no theme this year, each style of dance fits together nicely to create the spring concerts “Two Times Two.”
