Just when you thought this campus had it all, there is always something that may surprise new and even current students. Establishing its club in 2011, Evan Doktor, Jeff Cirillo, and Laurie Jenkins brought Ultimate Frisbee to life here at Springfield College.
It has remained alive and well since senior captain Cody Ross was a freshman. “I have been playing for 10 years and I was lucky enough to have a team at my middle school,” said Ross. Fortunately, you don’t need to have 10 years experience to join this squad.
The roster is currently made up of 27 students, all of whom have paid $40 to contribute to the team’s expenses. “We have traveled to Georgia for the past three years during Spring Break to compete against teams across the country in various tournaments. One year we earned third in the B division,” Ross continued, “and this year we will be in South Carolina.”
The Pride’s club teams have always been highly competitive. The club takes on schools such as Western New England University, University of Massachusetts, Central Connecticut State University, Keene State, and the University of Hartford, where for the past two years tournaments have been held.
“We even host tournaments here on the football field. We host them in the fall and spring, but spring is our main season,” two-time captain Ross explained.
Ultimate Frisbee is played on your typical football field using all of the lines. To start the game, one team “kicks off” the Frisbee to their opponent while each team plays with seven players at a time. Without running with the disc, players are to stop before throwing to a teammate. The opposing team takes possession of the disc when it hits the ground or it gets intercepted.
