VOTE: The Springfield Student Athlete of the Week for Jan. 23-29

This week’s nominees:

Gwen Andersen – The junior sprinter for the track and field team finished in first place and set a personal best in the 60-meter with a time of 7.98 seconds at the John Thomas Terrier Classic on Saturday.

Rachel Vinton – The senior guard for the women’s basketball team combined for 27 points throughout the week, including a team-high 18 in the Pride’s win over Babson on Saturday.

Christina Wygonik – The senior gymnast posted a career-best mark of 9.775 in the floor routine on Saturday against Brockport and Ithaca.

Stephanie Brown – The junior sprinter for the track and field team set a personal best in the 200-meter with a time of 26.47 seconds, and also had a top-five finish in the 60-meter with a time of 8.07 meters at the John Thomas Terrier Classic on Saturday.

And on the men’s side:

Myles Leonard – The first-year wrestler won with three pinfalls at the John Reese Duals on Sunday.

David Handron – The junior gymnast posted an event-best score in the rings with a 13.450 in the Pride’s meet against Army on Sunday.

Jonathan Chan – The sophomore swimmer won the 200 freestyle and 100 freestyle in the Pride’s meet against Trinity on Saturday. Then, he won the 100 free and was runner-up in the 200 fly in Springfield’s meet against Amherst on Sunday.

Chris Vayda – The junior distance runner for the track and field team set a personal best and had the best time for Springfield in the 5000-meter after completing it in 14:55.38 at the John Thomas Terrier Classic on Saturday.
