Springfield College men’s soccer secures first win over Potsdam

By Daniel Priest

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Friday evening the Springfield College Men’s Soccer team got their 2018-2019 season off to a successful start with a 2-0 victory over SUNY Potsdam.

The Pride wasted no time getting into the scoring column in this game. Brad Deckel netted the teams first goal at the 10:05 mark. Freshman Andrew Ma had a corner kick for the Pride and he set it up in just the right spot for Deckel to score.

Just 17 minutes after the opening goal, Springfield found the back of the net again. Joseph Olaynack set up Andrew Ma and he buried it to give Springfield a 2-0 lead at the 27:35 mark of the first half.

The goal was the first of his career for the freshman Ma.

Two goals would prove to be enough as the Pride’s defense pitched a shutout and helped earn the first career win for new Head Coach Tommy Crabill.

The Pride (19 shots, 9 shots on goal) out shot Potsdam (15 shots, 4 shots on goal) and senior goaltender Stewart Frank had three saves on the afternoon.

The game was part of the Best Western Plus Cardinal Classic hosted by SUNY Plattsburgh. Springfield (1-0) resume play tomorrow at 3:30 where they will face off against host Plattsburgh.
