SPRINGFIELD — The Springfield College women’s volleyball team opened the 2018 campaign in dominant style, as the Pride swept Westfield State and Lawrence en route to a pair of victories in the Springfield College Invitational at Blake Arena on Friday.
Springfield 3, Westfield State 0
The Pride handled the Owls to open their season with a victory. Bridget Walsh and Gabrielle Bradley each had seven kills, while Jen Donnelly notched six. Sara Labadorf also had 23 assists in the victory.
Springfield held a tight lead for the duration of the first set. After a kill from Bancroft gave the Pride a 14-10 lead, Ashley Tanner sparked a five-point run to make it 19-10. Westfield State answered with a couple points, before Springfield started a 6-0 run to take the first set, 25-12.
In the second set, the Pride pulled away with a kill from Camryn Bancroft to make it 16-8. Three more kills, two from Walsh, gave Springfield a 21-12 lead, before Kayley Cimino sealed the 25-13 victory with a kill.
In the third set, the Pride jumped out to a 13-7 lead, thanks to consecutive kills from Ashley Tanner and Bradley. Another kill from Bradley extended the lead to double digits, 19-9. Kait Bonsignore put the finishing touches with consecutive kills to clinch the set and sweep, 25-13.
Springfield 3, Lawrence 0
The Pride was headed by the trio of Bancroft (12 kills), Donnelly (9 kills) and Walsh (9 kills) as Springfield swept Lawrence to secure a clean sweep for the day. Sara Labadorf also contributed 35 assists in the victory.
Springfield held a slim 6-3 lead in the first set before exploding for a 7-0 run to open a 13-3 lead. Back to back kills have the Pride a 19-6 lead, while Donnelly and Walsh added two more kills. Bancroft sealed the 25-10 opening set win with a service ace.
The second set started off tight, but Springfield jumped out to a 10-5 lead behind Donnelly’s kill. After a 6-0 run to give the Pride a 19-8 lead, Bancroft notched a couple kills to end the set, 25-17.
In the third set, Bancroft and Bradley each registered kills to give Springfield a 20-10 lead. Cimino pushed the lead to 23-13 before a couple of errors from Lawrence gave Springfield the win.
The Pride (2-0) will face Skidmore at 10:30 a.m. before taking on Rhode Island College at 3:30 p.m. tomorrow in the Springfield Invitational.
