the Giving Tree
As you arrived back on campus filled with turkey and stuffed with pumpkin pie, you may have noticed a tree by the main staircase in the Richard B. Flynn Campus Union.
Known as the Giving Tree, it has ornaments on it that Springfield College students can take. On the ornaments are names of underprivileged children from the Springfield area and a list of gifts they would like/need for Christmas.
Set up by the Psychology Club, the Giving Tree provides another way for students to give back to our community and help those less fortunate then us.
“As a club we wanted to help the kids with psychological problems and those in need,” said Kristen DeAngelo, president of the Psychology Club. “We contacted two local agencies who help those in need with projects such as the Giving Tree and brought their work here.”
The Giving Tree project started this past Monday, Dec. 2, and will be up until classes end on December 13. The premise behind it is simple. All you have to do is select a child’s name hanging from one of the branches and look at what they have asked for or need for this holiday season.
Whether you get them their whole list or just one item, anything helps. Once you have gotten all of the gifts you would like to give, just place them in the box to the right of the tree.
“Anyone can take a name and give a gift, it’s as simple as that,” stated DeAngelo. “A lot of people here like to help out the community and I think Springfield College will definitely be open and willing to help in this way.”
Springfield College has always put an emphasis on community service and helping those who need it. The Giving Tree is an example of how important the surrounding community is to this college.
Be sure to spread the Holiday cheer to those who need it most, and make sure that everyone is reminded why this is the most wonderful time of year.
